35 Years of People Powered Radio

The original KZFR crew from 1992 (picture above) & (picture below) most of the current crew of volunteers and staff at our most recent All Station Meeting in the spring of 2025

It's always fun to find old pictures. The dark, orange hard copy picture above is a gem! Special thank you to Evan Carlos who gifted it to us recently at our Beats & Brews event. He was the programmer who started "Radio Free Chico" (back in the 1990s) which still airs today on Fridays with Dan Robles at the mic. When the two pictures from 1992 & 2025 are compared there are lots of similar faces and lots of new ones, too.

In the shot from 1992 we see David Guzzetti, Larry Crisman from American Pastimes, Mary Ryker, Ann Seymour & Ed Pitman, Dawn Shahar, Frank Ficarra, Eric Mathiesen, Lee Edwards, Phil Elkins & Kevin Durkin to name a few.

We wouldn't be surprised if you recognize many of those faces. They're your neighbors, your kids teacher or someone you enjoy chatting with at the Saturday morning farmers market maybe by Bobbi's coffee cart.

That's what Community Radio is all about! Giving local voices access to independent, non-commercial public media. And together we've managed to thrive for over 35 years.

To celebrate 35 years of independent community radio a 5 part series "Mic Check: An Oral History of KZFR" takes you behind the scenes of our earliest days. Through candid interviews with the programmers who helped build the station, each episode shares memorable moments from the first 10 years of KZFR’s history.

The 5 part series airs Tuesdays 6-6:30pm throughout July 2025. This series highlights the spirit of experimentation, dedication, and community that continues to shape KZFR today. You'll hear from newsmakers, talk show hosts, and music DJs who helped forge the path of this listener-supported, volunteer-powered station. Tune in locally on 90.1 FM, worldwide right here at KZFR.org or listen on your favorite podcast platform.
