Cultural Survival just released its second CD of Indigenous rights radio programs entitled Free, Prior, and Informed Consent and Other Indigenous Rights. Containing over 50 PSA's and short programs
it is based on internationally recognized rights and interviews with
Indigenous individuals from regions ranging from South America to
southeast Asia to the Arctic. The CD features Indigenous leaders, from
youth to elders, men and women, recounting ideas, challenges, and
projects regarding defense of land, food sovereignty, women's rights,
language revitalization, education, community radio, and more.
This CD is the second in a set, which began in 2013 with the release of our first CD on Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. That CD was just one component of the major new initiative we launched in 2013 on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), promoting one of the key rights spelled out in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
According to the Declaration, Indigenous communities have the right to give or withhold their consent when development projects threaten their human rights, land or culture. Unfortunately, the international documents that affirm these rights are not widely known or understood within many Indigenous communities, particularly in more isolated areas. People who are not informed about their rights cannot organize themselves to claim them. Many Indigenous communities struggle when confronted with development projects, often leading to serious conflicts and human rights abuses.
Cultural Survival's program is designed to build informed and organized Indigenous communities through community radio and community exchanges. The goal of the project is to build broad community awareness of Free, Prior and Informed Consent through community radio, while simultaneously facilitating development of relationships, networks, and strategies among community leaders through community exchanges to support organizing for implementation of FPIC.
Many of the programs featured on the latest CD were developed through conversations and connections made in these community exchanges.
