American Pastimes gets going with two from David Bromberg; there's a set of traveling tunes; then a great band who falsely advertise the presence of a jug (the South Austin Jug Band) and from 1929 another jug band with a non-existing jug (The Roanoke Jug Band). The Roanoke Jug Band formed in the late 1920's by some employees of the American Viscoe Company plant in Vinton, Virginia. They were actually a string band that played throughout south-central Virginia. The group never used a jug among their many instruments; it was included in their name by the record company for novelty effect. They only made four recordings, all in 1929 for the Okeh label, which are featured here. The Greenbriar Boys are also featured, as well a set of tunes culled from the Broadside catalog - performed by Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton and Pete Seeger. Lots of string bands and bluegrass in between!
