On American Pastimes Native American songwriter Jack Gladstone performs "In the Shadow of Mt. Lassen" the epic story of the Yahi Wars. The old tune "Steamboat Bill" is covered in recordings from 1911 (vaudeville), 1927 (jug band) and 1951 (country). There's songs about the Great Depression and the advent of Social Security for senior citizens (pro & con!). There's local trio Back Again (Fred Colgan, Kris Hare & John Wahl) performing songs from their only CD, "Still Here," and the musical arrangements of late scholar Joseph Byrd are featured in his work with Norman Blake and Ry Cooder. Lots of string bands - old and new - in between!!
