Every day during this campaign, KZFR will feature an on-air DJ with a social media vignette about themself, their radio program, personal interests, and more. This'll give you the opportunity to get better connected with the personalities you wake up and go to sleep listening to. In the time of stay-at-home orders we want our listeners to know that their community radio station is working hard to deliver cutting edge news and information and one-of-a-kind music selections.

We are proud to introduce you to KZFR DJs Jon, Lisa, Jake, Tom, George & Janet, Papa John & Russell

It's thanks to all our volunteer DJs that KZFR can continue to bring you the unique programming you value and enjoy every day.

Talkin About Practice co-host Jon Luken - "Jon-Thomas Luken- I joined KZFR in 2017 as a co-host, and self-proclaimed sports degenerate of Talkin’ Bout Practice, a sports talk show that is unorthodox in style. Our show discusses anything sports, from local to national news from the unique perspective of friends around the water cooler. I was brought in as a guest by creators Jarreau Gilbert and Derek Isomaki, not knowing that it would evolve into a permanent spot on the only locally produced sports talk radio show in the north state. I mean what could be better than talking sports and shooting the breeze with some of my best friends? Having graduated from Chico State with a degree in Broadcasting, I am thankful for the community and KZFR for giving me the opportunity to wet my feet and perfect my craft. I am proud to be apart of the KZFR family and truly feel blessed to be doing something I love while chasing my dreams of a career in sports radio."

Facets of Jazz & It's Just Jazz co-host Lisa Boyd - For years, Lisa has shared her love of the world of jazz with her listeners on Tuesday's Facets of Jazz & now she's joined the team on Monday's It's Just Jazz, too.

The Fun House & It's Just Jazz co-host Jake Sprecher - "My first exposure to KZFR came as a student delivering pizza for Woodstock's, around 2004. My buddy Bill Parnell had a midnight - 2am slot called Post-College Radio, and I'd come up to hang out. Then I started listening to Blues Bayou while I was delivering, and before long I was signed up for orientation. My first show was a midnight Tuesday slot called On the Contrary, which was a mixed bag of rock and soul. I had that for a couple years, and then subbed off and on for quite a while, guesting on the Random Pick a lot. I definitely honed many aspects of being on the air sitting across from Jeffrey. Then in 2012, I started working part-time on the KZFR staff, and continued doing so through 2018. In that same span of time I hosted Say Hey!, KZFR's first sports talk show, before moving on to The Fun House, which I currently co-host with the great Jim Howell. I also just recently joined the rotation for It's Just Jazz with Steve and Lisa.

I joined KZFR the summer of 2017 as an on air personality with Talkin' Bout Practice. Jarreau and Derek brought me in that year, I had no idea that it would lead to being a programmer with the only locally produced sports talk show in the North State. I have enjoyed my time reporting on our local High School and College athletics throughout the years and look forward to bringing you more North State Updates."

American Pastimes cohost Tom Leonardi - "I’ve been involved with KZFR since before we actually began broadcasting. As he was organizing the station Erik Mathisen asked me to help with his community outreach efforts so I assisted him with public relations and publicity. Then, a week or so before we were set to broadcast, he asked me to program a news show. For six years I hosted “Eco-Updates,” a 30-minute program that focused on local environmental issues. For a brief time Erik and I co-hosted an hour-long “news magazine” and then I joined him as an alternating co-host on American Pastimes. I’ve also served two terms on the Board of Directors. I discovered FM radio in the mid-1960’s when free-form was an acceptable format for commercial stations. Later, I discovered non-commercial radio: Pacifica and college stations. I was captivated by the mix of music and information that these stations produced. They were entertaining and educational. They broadened my horizons and world-view. When the opportunity came to be involved in community radio I jumped at the chance to broaden our listener’s horizons and to bring the world into our community."

Creole Stomp cohost David Samuels - "My home base on the Mighty Zephyr is Creole Stomp, I love all that rich and spicy music from down in Louisiana. Yum ! So good. I very much enjoy subbing in on other shows from the Big Zephyr Juke Box - blues, jazz, country, feral, rock 'n roll, world, native. Then there's the Zephyr Family of DJs, a happy band of hard working brothers and sisters, dedicated to enriching, informing, entertaining and spreading goodness in our North State community and the world. I'm proud, humble and lucky to be part of KZFR Experience."

Beatle Nation, Story Garden & Wonka Radio co-host Dena Kapsalis - "Almost 20 years ago, Liesl Jones & I each had preschoolers who were already voracious readers and lovers of books. As mom's, we were listening members of KZFR and appreciated the time and dedication the station devoted to children's programming. As educators ourselves, we couldn't help but see a place for a literary, thematic show for children as an alternative to screen time, and the opportunity to grow new community radio listeners. Using a toy Mr. Microphone, we recorded a demo for the KZFR Program Council, and that became Wonka Radio. Listeners will remember our closing line: "Where is fancy bred, in the heart, or in the head?" Wonka Radio was heard on KZFR for over a decade on alternating Wednesdays during children's programming. From there, I have engineered for shows created and hosted by both my son, Leo, and daughter, Lucía, and other local kids. These include Story Garden and Beatle Nation - which is heard every first and third Thursday from 7-7:30pm. We've truly grown up in the KZFR family. As a family, community members, listeners, and programmers, KZFR has played a deeply important role in our lives. We believe in people powered radio!"

Peace & Social Justice cohost Pastor Jesse Kearns - "I moved from Virginia to Chico 13 years ago. My first experience with KZFR was listening to a late night show featuring classic R&B. The next day I tuned in hoping to hear some more of that R&B but got a Reggae show instead. I asked around and learned that KZFR was a listener supported community radio station with a variety of programming including great public affairs shows. About two years into my time here in Chico, I was asked to be on Peace and Social Justice with Laura Avalon. Ten years later, I became one of the co-hosts! I’m happy and proud to be part of the KZFR family of programmers. I appreciate the station’s commitment to community and the community’s commitment to the station."

2 Penny Opera cohost Laurie Niles - "I use to phone Tim Kemper on Saturdays when he was hosting Two Penny Opera to either ask who he had just played or offer him a suggestion. Eventually, he asked if I'd be interested in becoming a programmer. In 2002, I completed my programmer certification and joined the community radio, programmer family. Tim and I weave acoustic-based music between our opening song from Darrell Scott "It's A Great Day" to our closing song from the Beatles "All You Need is Love". Everyone from Bill Monroe, Gillian Welch to the Avett Brothers and Langhorne Slim. Hosting 2PO is a unique opportunity to connect with the community (both via the airways and in-person) & share, express or alleviate what's going on around us in life. We've interviewed musicians and forged friendships with some and better still we've created friendships with our listeners. Technically Tim and I alternate hosting the show every other week.

We are proud to introduce you to KZFR DJs Stephen, Tim G, Kyle, Terre, Smiley, Mike G & Becky...

It's thanks to all our volunteer DJs that KZFR can continue to bring you the unique programming you value and enjoy every day.

Ecotopia host Stephen Tchudi - "I've been a fan of radio since I was a Cub Scout in 1953 and built a crystal radio from a kit. Moving around the cat's whisker, I could only pick up WWCO radio in Waterbury, Connecticut, five miles from my home. Later, as a soon-to-be-lapsed Congregationalist, I delivered youth sermons, which were aired at 6 am when nobody was listening. I also about that time put together a Heathkit FM receiver, which could capture one station, the only FM station around, in New Haven, Connecticut. As a kid, I had the legendary paper route and used the earnings to buy an Emerson am radio. I would dutifully clip the daily radio schedule from the paper and spend evenings listening to the radio serials: The Shadow, Bobby Benson and His B-Bar B Riders, Sky King of the Yukon. Later on, once I got a driver's license, I'd pick up clear channel radio stations from exotic and far distance places like Pittsburgh, Detroit, and even Kansas City. The girls I dated weren't so enthusiastic about those fuzzy signals--I can't understand why--but, next to women, I still think radio is the ultimate genre."

Zephyr Soul Stew host Tim Guista - "A relative newcomer to the KZFR family (at least as a programmer), I have always loved radio from the time I was just a kid listening to my “seven transistors” radio under my pillow so Mom wouldn’t hear. I grew up listening to early Top 40 radio in the Bay Area (KYA/KFRC) but particularly loved “KDIA Lucky 13” a soul station based in Oakland. Having lived in Chico since 1974, I co-started and ran the Pageant Theatre (film, another love) for 34 years. And now, on my program, Zephyr Soul Stew, I deliver a unique rhythm and blues/soul program to your ears as I mine the depths of the often forgotten or never discovered artists, primarily from the 50’s through the early 70’s. I also feature today’s artists who are bringing back that early soul style."

Creole Stomp co-host Kyle Porter - "I became a programmer at KZFR in 2008. Joining Bill, David and Hondo as a fourth member of the Creole Stomp Krewe. I’ve been going out to New Orleans and recording music since 1993. With all my recordings and knowledge of Louisiana music it was a perfect path for me to become a programmer and share my music with the community. My usual slot is the first Wednesday of the month. My business is Paradise Audio Services. I also do sound for most all KZFR benefit shows since 2009."

Face The Music host Terre Reynolds - "I sat down behind the mic at KZFR in 1999 to continue the work of bringing Diversity to our station. With the music of Women artists, well known, old favorites, hidden gems and the a wealth of Independent Artists. I have enjoyed traveling the country, and being exposed personally, to these extraordinary Women artists. I truly found a rich home of loving souls within the freedom of Community Radio. Every Thursday evening I look forward being with our listeners, at home, and the Beyond."

Cultural Roots of Aztlan host Smiley - "My show is dedicated to all the youth growing up, in the streets of this indigenous land. All the music I play serves to honor the memory and hard work of the many veteranos that came before me. All the musical selections represent and are inspired by the lived experiences, barrios, and roots of Chicano indigenous people. On the show you’ll hear a variation of native, classic soul, Chicano oldies, blues and conscious hip hop along with much more. Each song has a story and if you listen carefully you’ll hear the message. I am a Chicano Purpecha father and have 3 kids. We got to be drug and alcohol free, so our youth can follow in our footsteps."

All Mixed Up co-host Michael Gregg - "I got my start in radio during the 80's at college radio stations KDVS in Davis and KCSC in Chico. Back then college radio played an influential role in popularizing bands such as R.E.M., The Pretenders, and The B52's. My love of those 80's alternative rock bands has guided my musical tastes to this day which is why you'll hear a lot of guitar-driven pop and rock when I host All Mixed Up."

Tshua Hmoob host Becky Herr - "Tshua Hmoob"- Missing Hmong. Admiring the culture and the people, KZFR made it easy to reach out to the hmong community every Sunday from 6-8am. A husband and wife team bringing the latest news locally and internationally, explore the different music from the Hmong, Thai and Lao and culture. We look forward to bringing the community many more years of good entertainment."

Follow us on social media to get familiar with Chico’s eccentric, neighborly broadcasters.

We are proud to introduce you to KZFR DJs Sandra, Mark B, Brenton, Gayle, Lars, Mark G & Charlie

It's thanks to all our volunteer DJs that KZFR can continue to bring you the unique programming you value and enjoy every day.

Native Song & Peanut Butter Jelly Time host Sandra Morales - "I grew up in the east Bay Area. My earliest memories in the mid-60s were hanging out with my father and listening to baseball games on the radio. We also listened to the KGO news and talk shows. My mother mostly listed to classical music. About the time the 70s came around, I found myself listening to pop rock on AM 610 KFRC. I loved the top 20s. My friends and I would call in to request songs by the Jackson 5, the Osmonds and the DeFrancos. Started to record cassettes of my fav songs from the radio. By the late 70 it was a mix of Rock , Funk and a bit of Disco. By the 80s, I was totally into KFOG and became a “FogHead”. My favorite thing was to call in to answer trivia questions hoping to be the umpteenth caller for tickets. I relocated to Southern Oregon and began to win tickets to almost anything at least twice a month. Whilst earning a BS in Applied Psychology, I also worked on a minor in Technical Communications. I got to do short stints on Klamath Falls Oregon Institute of Technology radio station 89.5 FM KTEC! I had so much fun! Unfortunately in Grad school in Ashland I was unable to continue radio because I had a crazy 16 unit a quarter class load. After graduation I moved back to the Bay. We relocated to Chico in 2010. One morning I found a station with beautiful flute and drumming music. Lo and behold I found Native Song on KZFR! I listed to several shows on this station. I think I became involved with the station by chance. A friend who was also a programmer invited me to a KZFR Halloween party at at the Grange. Next thing I know I’m watching the merchandise table at the Big Room when Hannah Jane Kyle and Kyle Williams won the singer/songwriter’s award. It’s been fun watching her talent grow these past few years. I remember hearing the call for another reader to help the Tchudi’s read stories. They had been reading stories in the 7-7:30 time slot after their talk show Ecotopia. I had been thinking of stepping in for a kid’s 30 min show and this was my chance. I eventually moved to Thursdays and renamed the show to “Peanut Butter Jelly Time”. I became the Groovy Gramma (Sr. Filipe gave me that nickname). I found joy in bringing my grandkids on the show. Having them read or talk about school. I really value being able to sit in with other programmers and learn from them. Along with me kid’s show I have become the “Super Sub” I'm splitting the month with Native Song co-host Anna Kastner. I also sub for Basically The Blues, Face the Music, LA Sounds and much more. I recently became a member of the Board of Directors which has given me a better understanding of the stations mechanics. KZFR is my new family and I love being a part of this innovative community radio station!"

Facets of Jazz host Mark Bloom - "I did a jazz radio show in college back in the 70's, and got back into programming in 2001 with KZFR with a weekly Thursday 6 am show. I did that show and then one on Sunday afternoons for quite a while, burned out a bit and took a break, and then was asked to come back and join the Facets gang about five years ago. Doing a monthly show is perfect for me, and I'm happy to share my love of classic jazz with the KZFR listeners."

Radio Radics host Brenton Farrell - "Since becoming a certified programmer in 2003, I have been given so many kind opportunities from the ZEPHYR family. Sanjay Dev first allowed me to cover his show while he travelled during summers. An exciting, albeit lofty undertaking that scared me to the core! Shoshanna shared her Monday show with me soon after. And finally Solid Rock—sadly left for his hometown of San Diego but lobbied hard for me to continue his Wednesday slot. What makes KZFR such a meaningful institution is the support and mentorship that happens off the air. I can truly say that we have some of the most knowledgeable musical minds assembled anywhere, but more importantly, I have made many friendships that I truly cherish. And as to the listeners, you are included in those friendships, even if we have never met in person."

Ask Dr. Gayle host Dr. Gayle Kimball - “Asking questions is one of her favorite activities, along with writing books, dancing, hiking and gardening. She is the author of over 20 books. The latest are Calm: How to Thrive in Challenging Times and a trilogy based on interviews with visionary scientists. Her show features a panel of experts interviewed by Gayle on a variety of current topics ranging from local education and politics, involved fathers, gender issues, teen issues, integrative health care, and on. Some are on her YouTube channel, along with her KZFR interviews."

The Dinosaur Hour host Lars Larsen - "My journey with KZFR started in 1988 in the Radio Shack store in Paradise Cal. The clerk who waited on me turned out to be Larry Bennett who was a huge proponent of KZFR in those early days. He enthusiastically told me about this new radio station. I said that I had wanted to be a DJ since childhood and told him I was an avid record collector. His reply was “Come to a meeting” which I did. After studying and obtaining an FCC Radio Operator’s License, I was ready to rock n’ roll and in July of 1990 “The Dinosaur Hour” was born. In the beginning, KZFR had no microwave link from studio to the transmitter, so I would go to this little makeshift studio and record 5 half hour reel to reel tapes every Friday morning which would then be taken to the transmitter to be played directly on the air at 7:30. It was interesting to say the least, to listen to my show on Friday evening with friends. It often became a bit of a dance party. KZFR has always been a labor of love for me. I’ve worked at countless events and served on the Board of Directors twice through the years. Love each other and Love KZFR!"

All Mixed Up host Mark Gray - "The radio seed was planted as a kid growing up in rural Nigeria. In the evenings the shortwave radio became my link to the outside world. Always loved AM radio and especially the left end of the FM dial. I met Eric Mathiesen, our founder on a float trip down the Sacramento River and started volunteering. Willing to do whatever helped, I joined the initial Program Council and began running reel to reel tapes up to the Nimshew transmitter site when we first went on the air. Facets of Jazz with Frank Ficarra and a punkish/heavy rock show by Adam Wakeling were the Saturday afternoon shows I ferried up and listened to as the sun went down. A few months after being on the air, Adam had to bow out and I took over the spot with Everything Under the Sun. Later it moved to Friday afternoon as Offramp. Then on to Tuesday evenings with All Mixed Up for some years and then to Saturdays. I have been lucky to share the show with so many amazing people which included Jeff Livingston, Barbara Manning, Drew Traulsen, Jill Paydon and Jim Howell. The current lineup continues with Mike Gregg, Rafiki and Danno. Not sure how I got this lucky but a huge thank you to the KZFR family, musicians, listeners and business supporters."

Feral Radio host Charlie “Feral Cat” Barnes - "Feral Radio was a big part of my reconstructing my life following the loss of my wife.

Through the years I have made many self discoveries that I share with my listeners. My goal is share my joy, positivity and enthusiasm for life. I do my best to apply the same principle to my choice of music. From 80s rock to modern jams I aim to keep the good vibes rollin’. I hope you enjoy my show! I even managed to stumble upon this community gem just before Grant started doing the training for new programmers. I got started right away and decided to do a show that wasn’t just music based. So I developed Writing on Air, a forum meant to celebrate writing. As I see it, the show is like a picture frame, and the guests bring the art. Check back on my profile page and Youtube Channel (Writing on Air) for the newest shows, or email me to be on the show ‘write.onair@gmail.com’. Enjoy the broadcast!"

The Wheel host Rebecca Senoglu - "I started listening to KZFR when I moved to Chico in 2001. I work as the Cancer Support Program Coordinator at Enloe, and I’m also an ordained minister. I’ve performed a lot of weddings and funerals for this community, I served on the Chico Area Interfaith Council, I volunteer for Safe Space, I stand at the Saturday Peace Vigil, and I’m also a Quaker. So it is easy to understand why I love “People Powered Radio!” Since 2011, I’ve had a growing mission to raise awareness about all the ways we as individuals and as a community could do a better job of preparing for death. Some have called it “the most important conversation we never have.” I’ve done trainings and presented workshops and formed a network, but it often felt like I was preaching to the choir. I was getting nudges that I should have a radio show on KZFR to reach a broader audience. I produced some shows for Sue on the Real Issue, and realized I really like it! It took me a couple of years, but now I host The Wheel: Considering the Mysteries of Living and Dying on the 5th Thursdays of the month at 6 p.m. I call myself “your local voice in the international movement to bring death out of the closet.” My goal is to keep the show entertaining, informative, and encouraging. I always feature stories of real people, usually locals, in the segment called This American Death. I mix in poetry and music. You can follow my Facebook page at The Wheel Mysteries or look up Rebecca Senoglu on SoundCloud to catch old shows. I believe in the power of community and in the importance of community radio. KZFR is more than a great music station, it’s also a powerful megaphone. I hope you’ll put the 5th Thursday at 6 on your calendar. I’d love to have you join the conversation."

Left Of Passage host Cohen Morano - "My show Left of Passage (previously Right of Passage) came from my pal Oliver Maes and I wanting to start a show that could be seen as a contrast to the other music being played on the station. Although Oliver has moved onto other things (such as a radio show at UC Davis), I continue to try to push the ranges of what is on local radio by constantly changing up what music gets played and trying to bring attention to genres that are under represented on the air waves. Although the show is only three years of age, I hope it continues to grow and evolve into new territory and continues to avoid being pinned down by any previous expectations of it. Are those bold claims for a radio show run by a 19 year old? Definitely. But does the show deliver? Probably not."

Revolutions Per Minute host Drew Traulsen - "I've loved music since I was a toddler. My dad always had oldies radio on and I developed a deep appreciation for R&B, rock-n-roll, rock and all of their related derivatives. In 1977, I bought my first record ('Alive II' by Kiss). In 1979, I bought my first punk records (the Clash's 'Give 'Em Enough Rope' and 'Never Mind the Bullocks' by the Sex Pistols) and I was spellbound and immersed myself in the Southern California punk rock scene. Punk rock changed my life. Since then I have worked in college radio (KUCI 88.9 FM), worked at Zed Records, published my own fanzine, run my own record label, designed flyers/album covers/t-shirts/stickers, booked and promoted shows and managed a North American tour. I came to Chico in 1994 for school and never left (eventually writing my Master's Thesis on punk rock!). I started at KZFR in 2008, doing a rotation of the All Mixed Up show and the weekly KIdzone! show with my youngest daughter. Since 2012, I have been the weekly host of the Revolutions Per Minute show (on Saturday’s at 7:30 PM) where I play alternative, indie, punk and obscura. Don't be scared...join me some time."

Miles Ahead, Miles Behind co-hosts Clay LaFaro Ellington - "I've been hosting Miles Ahead And Miles Behind for over 20 years now! My love of jazz started with Duke Ellington as my first concert. I value creativity and originality in music. Whether that's a compsistion from Thelonious Monk or a John Coltrane solo. It is all ear candy to me. I've been co-hosting with my friend Bill Bathurst for 6 years now. He lived the jazz life in the 40s, 50s, and 60s and has seen and met the greats like John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. He brings a staggering amount of jazz knowledge to each show. KZFR is the quintessential definition of creativity and originality. Being a part of KZFR is an honor. It's a powerful tool that connects me with my community. My type of music is Reggae but on my show I play hip hop, funk, R&B, Roots Reggae and many more. If the music has a good message it's my type of music and I can't wait to play it on the radio."

Radio Active host Ginger Nichols - "I've been a programmer at KZFR for nearly 10 years. Throughout my years of programming I've had the privilege of watching myself grow up and mature into the 15 year old that I am today. Tune in Tuesday’s at 6:30pm!"

Writing On Air host Kevin Cook - "I moved up to Chico for school, and got extraordinarily lucky with finding KZFR.

My life has been helped tremendously by being associated with it."

Follow us on social media to get familiar with Chico’s eccentric, neighborly broadcasters. Every day during this campaign, KZFR will feature an on-air DJ with a social media vignette about themself, their radio program, personal interests, and more. This'll give you the opportunity to get better connected with the personalities you wake up and go to sleep listening to. I'm passionate about radio, luv my listeners and am thankful to be a part of the KZFR community."

The Breakdown host Branden Melrose - "I think that I created The Breakdown because of one person. Bill Nye. I grew up in an age of television where shows like Bill Nye the science guy, how it's made, and a number of other edutainment shows were very popular. As I grew up though I realized that most people became burnt out in school and at work and lost a lot of the curiosity that makes learning fun. I worked as both a tutor and as a teaching assistant. During that time I found the joy that lights the faces of people when they come to understand something. So when I found out about KZFR and saw the mission statement on the wall of the studio I was sold on joining and trying to bring edutainment back to the airwaves. I love covering a large variety of subjects and hearing from listeners. If I have peaked any of your interests and tempted you to search out knowledge then I have done everything I have ever wanted."

The Real Issue host Sue Hilderbrand - "I have always loved political talk radio. As a kid I would sit on the bathroom counter, with the door locked, and listen for hours to the voices talking about serious stuff. Radio is both an intimate and lonely medium, and has been a constant companion for me. KZFR allows me to be one of those faceless voices talking about politics, and I take this opportunity very seriously. The airwaves are a scarce resource, so I carefully choose the topics and guests each week. The goal of my weekly program is to serve the community by allowing us to talk with each other and to strengthen our democracy by wrestling with the issues that affect us all. KZFR is a force for good, and it is an honor to be a part of it."

Funky Reservations & All Mixed Up co-host Rafiki ‘The Choctow’ Webster - "I would like to say that I am very fortunate and grateful to be a part of the KZFR family. My musical influence started during the 1960's, by being exposed to various genres of music by family members who were musicians either in church or in bands. Growing up in San Francisco primarily, I was exposed to Soul, gospel, funk, rock eventually jazz and from living in Oklahoma country music. It wasn't until I started high school in 1972, that I discovered reggae music to round out my electrical, musical interests. During high school, I had an interest in the bass guitar and saxophone, in which I practiced all the time, but I wasn't any good to play in any groups. But one thing that I could do very well, was spin some discs, since I was always hanging out at the record stores (Tower, Warehouse, Wauzi). Upon coming to Chico to attend college, we noticed that there wasn't good music on the radio locally, so my friends and I would make frequent trips to the Bay Area, to purchase albums with our financial aid money to host house parties in the area. We were always pipelining music from local stations out of S.F., Oakland and L.A (KDIA, KSOL, KDAY and KBLX) to keep us in the groove. I've also had 20 years experience of being musical roady, working with and accompanying bands at various casinos and outside venues. I like to thank my musical experience and knowledge to being a contributing factor to KZFR in which I've been on board since 2013. I was mentored by Jim Howell (who I co-hosted with) on All Mixed Up and Sanjay Dev from Devastation Sounds. It was Sanjay who put the bug in my ear to become a programmer on this esteemed station with the help of DJ PHG. Now I can proudly say that I now have my own show (Funky Reservation) who I proudly share with Lady Amsburger, and together, we bring you music from uncharted territories. We play new and old school classics that most of our listeners have never heard and make it relevant. That's the secret of our success, by keeping our music funky, and tasty, like good barbecue off the grill. So tune in on Thursday's and get your soulful explosion and join me every 4th Saturday on All Mixed Up. Thank you KZFR and I thank you wonderful listeners."

The Power of Love host Lili Silva - "I have 3 amazing people in this world that I feel inspired me to be a DJ. First, my lovely Grandma. I used to spend my summer vacation with her. She'd wake up at 5:30am & turn on her little kitchen battery radio. I used to wake up with the radio on & the smell of coffee. I spent quality time with my lovely grandma. Second, Irineu Toledo, journalist & broadcaster in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Creator of the first journalism program at FM with a focus on personal development, work, business and motivation. I used to wake up early just to listen to his program. His voice lead & transformed my life with inspiring messages to start the day. Third the KZFR Family. Specially Hondo, I feel grateful for his help with the first step of becoming a DJ. Steve O'Bryan, I feel happy that he unexpectedly put me on the air. I have so much gratitude for Diana Suzuki who trusted me to sub many of her shows. I feel happy being with Jan Bielfelt who showed me how to use the computer. Bill Mash with his good energy & help with my first demo interview. Dan Carter helped me with my great second demo & interview with Montriel Jamari that also inspired me to do my own podcast. Stephen & Susan Tchudi for letting me watch them doing great interviews. Kev, Jim, Rick Anderson, Shoshana, Sr Felipe, Rafiki, Smiley, Cohen & Sanjay for welcoming me on their shows. About 2 year ago, when I met KZFR DJ Hondo volunteering for KZFR at the Farmers Market, I shared with him that I had a dream to play Brazilian sounds and inspiring people to transform their lives through positive thinking. Then a year later, I crossed Hondo leaving KZFR & he asked me about my dream. I said, "I still have it & I am ready to start". I got my application & a list of certified programmers that I could start my training with. I contacted them all and made appointments with almost all of the. I fell in love with them all, they welcomed me & showed me their style. About 20 days later, I got approved for my certification test. In October of 2019, I felt amazingly happy to have my own show. Writing this made me realize that I am doing the same as my grandma, but now my radio is KZFR. I feel happy to host “The Power of Love". I feel honored to be part of the KZFR Family to broadcast my Brazilian culture & music. I also wish to be an inspirational speaker, talking communication, empowering people to have a loving, healthy relationships & changing the future through positive thinking & constructive action."

All Mixed Up co-host Dan Duart - "Radio has always been a major love of mine, right after music and comedy. So, why not combine them? During my grade school days in New Jersey, I'd catch AM DJs out of New York City, like WABC, then during high school and college in the Midwest, when FM was catching on, Chicago radio was a musical beacon, WXRT, in particular. Moving to Berkeley in 1980s, I discovered KALX, KPFA, KQED, KFOG and others.

Jake Sprecher invited me to do my first training to become a radio programmer on his show ‘Say Hey’. I thought I was just going to sit in but right as the show began Jake slid a microphone my way and said “you are about to do your first radio show”. I was nervous (and probably terrible) but after that experience I was hooked! Grant Parks took me under his wing and with the support of our GM Rick I began to develop my own radio programs. I now host the longest running hip hop show on KZFR with “FLiPSiDE RADiO” and Chico’s only locally produced sports talk show “Talkin Bout Practice”. My goal when I first started doing radio was to connect with one listener, now both shows have created their own unique community. I cannot thank KZFR enough for the love, support, and encouragement. I found a second family at KZFR and I found my passion."

Ecotopia co-host Susan Tchudi - "I spent thirty years as an academic (professor of English) before retiring from Reno (UNR) to Yankee Hill, CA, to start a farm with my family. One of the first people we met was Sue Hilderbrand, and through her, Steve and I became KZFR programmers. We've aired over 500 shows of Ecotopia, which suits our skills as researchers and educators. Environmental volunteer work (with Butte Environmental Council and Environmental Coalition of Butte County) pairs beautifully with Ecotopia. My son, Mojohito, worked for a time as a KZFR engineer and programmer (the Phatty), which I subbed for a few times. Our farm, TurkeyTail, is thriving under the care of Cheetah Tchudi and his wife Samantha Zangrilli, producing pastured meat (pork and lamb), mushrooms, duck eggs, flowers and herbs. Our retirement has been rich and rewarding, thanks, in part, to the KZFR family."

Without A Roof, Youth For Justice & Studio 416 co-host Guillermo Mash - "I started recording sound waves on a Realistic cassette recorder in my early teens and had my first broadcast gig beneath the waves manning the phones on a U.S Fleet Ballistic Submarine. I was a moonlighting private event DJ, aka Super Sound, in my late twenties. I joined KZFR five-years ago hosting the Peace & Social Justice and Without a Roof radio programs. I tell stories. Audio stories, video stories, photo stories and my greatest passion -- written stories. I turn 60 the 29th of June and will be celebrating with a three-month sabbatical. Fear not Zephyrs! They don't call me Amburgers for nothing, I'm always putting hot sauce on whatever I plays when it comes to funk, boogie and the right amount of disco. Open your ears, mind and belly, you will be surprised on how good music can taste. The records are always served fresh from my Soul Kitchen!!! How lucky am I that I am in two professions, as a current math teacher at Butte College for 30 years (also retired from Chico State University after teaching for 26 years) and as a dj for 27 years teaching the goodness of reggae music. Both professions were purely accidental for me. I worked as a math tutor for extra income when I was asked if I would teach and as an avid collector of reggae music, was asked if I would dj. Not sure if I would have wanted to do either at the time, I feel blessed now as I look back. My radio show was called, “Chooguloogu’s Crucial Cuts” initially and it has been renamed “Dev-a-station Sounds” since 2000. Having collected over 25000 reggae vinyls, I present my show with the rarest and heaviest sounds I can bring with emphasis on esoteric singers. Being a frequent traveler at fifty-five, I have travelled to fifty-three countries, and I aim to tally the numbers to my age. I have generously contributed for social and humanitarian causes, be it in providing scholarships to children, raising funds during disasters, or in logistically supporting schools and organizations. I feel even more lucky to have two homes, one right here in beautiful Chico and other the place I grew up, my beautiful homeland of Nepal."

Not Necessarily Nashville host Peter Ratner - "I had been listening to KZFR since it started, and thought that there wasn't enough country being played. At the time Pennylee's "Truck Stop Special" was the only country show we had, and she was on at 10pm Saturdays. I had the idea for NNN after hearing James McMurtry's "We Can't Make It Here" , and thought that it was an important type of country song for people to hear. Over the years I've shifted my focus from country to Americana, and from the more political song to featuring more women artists. I love bringing new music to people, and being on the air is still the most fun I've had with my clothes on."

Mood Swings host Kay Paden - "I grew up in the Bay Area going to concerts and listening to 45s on the Wurlitzer Jukebox in our living room. We had Willie Nelson, Prince, Billy Squier, Leon Redbone, ACDC, Joan Jett, Ray Charles, Patsy Cline, Kris Kristofferson, and the list went on. It was magical as a kid to lift the top up and watch the machinery perform. I also loved to write and dissect lyrics. A friend recently said she had a dream we were analyzing Thom Yorke lyrics with papers spread out all over the room insistent on figuring out what he was trying to say! Good luck! My love of music inspired me to go to school and work in radio. The reality of no work hit, so I went into education instead with a focus in music. After moving North and learning about KZFR, I wasted no time in becoming a programmer and starting Mood Swings. Shortly after, my very shy 11 year old son started his show, Webster’s Rhythms where he played only Weird Al. KZFR helped him find his voice and as a 23 yr. old young man, he still subs for me! Community Radio is such a gift!"

Follow us on social media to get familiar with Chico’s eccentric, neighborly broadcasters. In the time of stay-at-home orders we want our listeners to know that their community radio station is working hard to deliver cutting edge news and information and one-of-a-kind music selections.

We are proud to introduce you to KZFR DJs JRo, Susan, Guillermo, Amburgers, Sanjay, Peter & Kay...

It's thanks to all our volunteer DJs that KZFR can continue to bring you the unique programming you value and enjoy every day.

Flipside Radio & Talking About Practice co-hosts J Ro - "I first got involved with KZFR back in 2014.

I'll be re-airing some of my favorite interviews and musical guests all summer."

Electronic Phonics & Funky Reservations co-host DJ Amburgers - Music Lover through and through. "I dig up music that feeds your mind, your soul and your taste buds. Hot 12-inches that I've cultivated from your grandma's garage sale to the hippest thrift shops to the back alley record stores."

Devastation Sounds host Sanjay Dev - "Math is my passion and music is my salvation.
